Ultherapy™ (Ulthera) is a new type of nonsurgical cosmetic procedure for achieving skin reminiscent of an earlier time. The Ulthera® System is used by physicians and their specially certified staff to precisely deliver acoustic sound waves deep into the skin to thermally initiate the body's own rejuvenative mechanisms. This is done with the help of acoustic imaging for seeing the layers of soft tissue before treating. This novel ultrasound combination promises to set a new standard in the aesthetics industry.
Clinical evaluation at Northwestern University has shown that one full face Ultherapy treatment can produce significant and satisfying tightening and lift. Findings of three independent physician evaluators and quantitative assessment of photographs revealed that 9 of 10 treated subjects demonstrated clinically significant eyebrow lift at 90 days, resulting in less hooding and a more open look to the eyes. Subjects reported firmer, tighter skin in other areas of the face and an overall refreshed appearance as well.
In this 30-minute, completely non-invasive procedure, the practitioner gradually moves the flat surface of the ultrasound applicator over each region of the face. The sound waves deliver small, controlled amounts of energy into the deep layers of skin and soft tissue while sparing the upper layers. The procedure has an excellent safety profile, is tolerated without need for an anesthetic, and the patient can return to his or her daily routine immediately.
September 16, 2009) — U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted clearance for the use of its Ulthera® System to achieve a non-invasive eyebrow lift.
The Ulthera® System is considered a first-of-its-kind technology, unprecedented in the marketplace, and as such underwent a 510(k) "de novo" review by the FDA. It is substantially different than other in-office aesthetic devices because it combines visualization beneath the skin's surface with non-invasive delivery of ultrasound energy at depths that enable significant lifting of the skin. While drawing on the same reliable ultrasound principles that physicians and patients have trusted for decades, Ulthera's patented DeepSEE™ technology allows physicians in aesthetics to both see and treat deep below the skin without surgery.
First came fillers in the Eighties, then lasers, then Botox—all still useful in their own way. And there's always been surgery. Now there's Ultherapy®—a face and neck treatment that creates a brand new category in aesthetics—non-invasive tissue lifting. For the first time ever, Ultherapy enables practitioners to direct sound waves not only into the skin but deep under the skin to the same tissue addressed in surgery. This gently heats the tissue to lift and tighten loose skin without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. Besides the visible effects of lifting and tightening, there is also an invisible result from Ultherapy with the creation of new collagen, which helps the skin maintain its youthfulness.
Ultherapy lifts, tightens, and tones loose skin to counteract the effects of time and gravity. One of the first effects of gravity is that the brows descend, and the eyes start to appear smaller. Ultherapy will lift the brow, which in turn reduces the excess skin on the lids, opens up the eyes and gives a more refreshed appearance.
The beauty of Ultherapy is that it is a 30 to 60 minute procedure that uses the body's own subtle healing response to gently, gradually—and reliably—restore memory to the skin and its underlying tissue. Ultherapy requires no special recuperation or preparation and typically only takes one treatment to get a meaningful response. Patients enjoy some initial effect immediately following the procedure, but the ultimate lifting will take place over 2-3 months, as tired collagen is rejuvenated and supplemented with new, stronger collagen. There isn't a replacement for the dramatic effects of surgery, but Ultherapy offers a 'no downtime' approach to improving lax skin in a meaningful way.
As with other ultrasound procedures, a smooth applicator placed upon your skin projects an image onto a screen that allows your practitioner to plan where the energy will be sent. This same applicator is then used to deliver low levels of focused heat at just the right depth below the skin to achieve a positive effect, all the while leaving the surface of your skin undisturbed. Your skin's response to the energy is to stimulate the growth of new collagen. A gradual tightening and firming occurs, resulting in a natural lift of the skin over time.
Ultherapy is the only nonsurgical skin rejuvenation procedure that can specifically target and strengthen the deep foundational layer of tissue that doctors address in surgery. The ability to treat not just the skin but its underlying support, from the inside out, helps to ensure both safe and satisfying results, with no downtime. — What does it feel like? There can be some discomfort while the energy is being delivered, but it is temporary and a signal that the collagen-building process has been initiated. Comfort thresholds vary from patient to patient, and practitioners will discuss options for making the experience as pleasant as possible. Patients typically leave comfortable and excited about the benefits to come.
You are able to return to your normal activities right away, and there are no special measures you need to take. Your skin may appear a bit flushed immediately after the treatment, but any redness should disappear within an hour or so. Occasionally patients may experience slight swelling, tingling, or tenderness to the touch, but these are mild and temporary in nature.
Ultrasound energy has a proven track record, with use in the field of medicine for over 50 years and clinical trials have demonstrated the safety of this latest application. As with any medical procedure, there are general safety considerations, which your physician will review with you.
With just one treatment, the regenerative process is initiated, but the full effect will build gradually over the course of two to three months. Some patients may benefit from more than one treatment. Visible effects include a lifting and toning of loose skin. In the FDA clinical trial for instance, nine out of ten patients had a noticeable, significant lift of the brow line. This resulted in reduced skin laxity on the eyelid and a more open, youthful look to the eyes overall. Patients reported firmer, better-fitting skin in other areas of the face and neck as well. There is also an invisible result from the procedure with the creation of new collagen, which can help to slow down the rate of skin aging.
A good candidate for Ultherapy is someone with skin that has "relaxed" to the point of looking, and often feeling, less firm. A lowered brow line or sagging skin on the eyelids, for instance, is often the first sign of "maturing" skin. While it is not a replacement for surgery, Ultherapy has proven to be an inviting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery.
